PORT ALFRED

The Easter weekend has come and gone as has the successful running of the Sunshine Coast Open Pairs, sponsored by the Royal St Andrews Hotel.

The cup winner was Paul King with this club’s team of Stuart McDougall and Anna Strombeck the proud runners-up.

The plate winners were Kowie’s Jonty Alexander and Justin Lowe, with Pieter Stegman and Lennie Clarke, also of Kowie, the runners-up. Many thanks to Jaco van Rensburg for organising the sponsorship and also a big thanks to the sponsor.

This club’s novice singles final will be played this week with Anna Strombeck to play Joanne van Rensburg in the ladies’ final while Jaco van Rensburg comes up against Nick Oosthuizen.

On Thursday last week the Peg and Horace Purdon was contested at Kowie with mixed results for this club. Mary McLean skipped her team to a win, as did Jaco, while skips Julie Sluziuk and Fred Stowe tried hard but failed to come up with wins.

The start of the men’s and ladies’ senior singles gets played this Wednesday, weather permitting.

Last week, the Guido’ssponsored afternoon was held with Peter McCullam (skip), Nick Oosthuizen, Martin Leonard and Debbie Rees emerging as the winners.

This past Saturday, only two rinks were filled due to the threat of rain but after only two ends, heavy drizzle forced the players to the club house.

KENTON

How about if we report the activities of the week in reverse order for a change.

From Sunday our intrepid band of five ladies who headed south like a flock of swallows in Autumn, will be playing in the All Cape. Pam, Wynne, Jean, Sheila and Lydia, good luck and happy bowling and don’t take with you the lyrics of the Crowded House song: “Everywhere you go, always take the weather with you”

Saturday, as it turned out it was Weather 1, Bowlers 0 for the Kenton Garden Servicessponsored

trips.

Friday the weather cleared and Dekkers Devils were out in force for some merry bowls enjoyment.

Thursday, it was off to Port Alfred in the sunshine for the next round of the Peg and Horace Purdon triangular competition between us, Port Alfred and Kowie. The two men’s teams skipped by Mike Palmer and Gert Immelmann put in mighty performances. Mike and team were unlucky to go down 20 to 19. Gert’s team romped home with a 20 to 14 victory. The final points taken forward were Kenton 2 +5, Kowie 2 +12 and Port Alfred 2 –17. The ladies’ teams under the skip-ship of Mo Marsay and Joanie Collet did equally well, with one win and one loss for their share in the spoils.

The Wednesday Spar Day trips was won by Johan Grobler as he and his team left all in their dust with a, can you believe it, 10 + 23. Mo’s 10 +8 and Stompie’s 8 +17 just couldn’t match that.

KOWIE

Playing in cool, overcast weather, Tuesdays tabs competition which was generously sponsored by Judy’s Kitchen, was won by Mike Ryan and his team of Dolores Johnson and Judy Hunter, our visitor from Milnerton Bowling Club.

Although there were warnings of possible rain on Saturday afternoon, it was rather a let-down for the handful of bowling enthusiasts who handed in their tabs in anticipation of getting a game played … but to no avail. The lovely rains won the day’s play.

Over the weekend, our lady team of Judy Alexander, Avice Steenkamp, Debbie Slattery and Helise Hattingh travelled to Sedgefield to play in the Lady’s All-Cape tournament.

The ladies had a good start, and won their first two games quite convincingly.
