BOWLSBANTER

PORT ALFRED

The Kowie Bowling Club’s GBSsponsored day last Saturday proved to be a lot of fun.

Two games of 15 and one of 18 ends were played, with each game having a different set of rules, which will probably be outlined in the Kowie column.

Those who supported the day from this club were Brian and Mary McLean, Jack Wiid, Anna Strombeck and Arthur Beresford. The best finisher from this club was Brian, who was drawn to play with Leon Evans, a member of Kowie and Andries Bezuidenhout, who played in the business league. They ended in third place.

Due to the croquet tournament being played, only a few from this club turned out to play on Saturday afternoon which was sponsored by Radue Optometrists.

At the end of play, Bryan Burger and Lee Oberem, a visiting bowler from Old Boys Bowling Club in East London, emerged the winners with Louise Vincent and Carol Oosthuizen the runners-up.

Then on Thursday last week, the Moore Shield and Colleen Timm were played at Kenton. The outcome proved disappointing, with both ladies’ sides being beaten while regarding the two men’s teams, skip Hein Strombeck’s side of Bryan Burger, Phil Taylor and Brian McLean lost but a big well done to skip Trevor Frost. Jack Wiid, Jim Haslow and

Henry van den Oevre, who beat a strong Kowie side.

Good luck to those bowlers who will be playing in the Kowie Classic this weekend.

KENTON

This week, tabs-in is ‘in‘ again and novices are ‘out’ but just in case you missed who was crowned the best of the best, in the novice ladies it was Laeticia Smith who came first with runner up Ronel Hough in second place.

In the men’s it was Tony Ribbink who lost out to Mark Janse van Rensburg, the winner for the second year in a row. (Almost as big an event as the Springboks winning the Rugby World Cup twice in a row.)

(Maybe we can make a

Chasing the Sun in Kenton

documentary out of this!)

The rest of the week was tabs, tabs and more tabs-in, except on Thursday when we also hosted visiting teams from Kowie and Port Alfred for the next round of the Moore Shield and the Colleen Tim competitions. Great performance from our the ladies in the Colleen Tim, as they took the honours for the day with Kenton 2 +4, from Kowie on 2 +1, and Port Alfred on 2 -5.

In the cumulative standings after two rounds, Kowie are still edging on 6 +59, to our Kenton 4 16, and Port Alfred on 2 -43.

In the men’s Moore Shield competition, we were oh so close with Kowie 2 +22, Kenton 2 +20,

and Port Alfred on 0 -42. So smiles all around well done to our Kenton bowlers for a stirling performance.

Friday was interesting when the weather had no favourites when transforming both the Mad Hatters and the social bowlers into drowned rats, happy to retreat into the warmth of the clubhouse.

KOWIE

Due to the latest intermittent rains, our greens are looking very lush. The heavier-than-normal greens have resulted in our members, and visitors, struggling a little at the start of their games, but soon settling into good weight and grass.

Tuesday afternoon’s tabs competition was won by Denny Richardson and his team of Gill Armstrong and Leon Evans.

Wednesday morning’s novice session was well attended where Howard Jackson-Moss is showing good potential to start playing regular tabs soon.

Playing in relatively cool overcast weather, Thursday afternoon’s tabs bragging rights were deservedly won by Robbie*

Muzzell and his team of Dave Tyrrell, Rob Walker, and Sheena Warren. Thursday also saw two ladies and mens teams traveling through to Kenton to play in the second round of the Colleen Timm Cup and the Moore Shield.

The ladies managed to win one game and narrowly lost the other. The progressive leaderboard has Kowie ladies having a onepoint lead over Kenton and then followed by Port Alfred.

In the Moore Shield, the men also won one and lost one. The leader board shows that Kowie is leading, with Kenton in second spot and Port Alfred in third spot.

The third round will be hosted by Port Alfred on May 29.

Kowie GBS Competition:

Saturday morning saw 60 enthusiastic bowlers arriving at the Kowie Bowling Club to play in the annual GBS-sponsored competition, which was aptly named “The GBS Surprise”. This was due to the many different formats and rules that were conjured up for each game to make it a fun day for all.

To make it fair for all, the

teams were all drawn teams.

And what a fun day it was, with skips desperately seeking advice from their team members on what rule was being applied for each set in the game.

To make it a lot easier, the organisers gave each skip a hand out for reference, to clarify each games ‘rules’. Talk about surprises.

After completing the first two games, there was a lunch break, after which a “spider” competition was held. Jacques Moolman’s bowl ended up closest to the spider and ended up winning a prize.

The club was very happy to announce that all the money that was collected was donated to the Margate Bowls Club.

Their club was completely destroyed in the recent floods.

During game three, a bell was rung, and the first player who got a “toucher,” was awarded the GBS toucher prize. This was won by Brian (Foxy) Fox.

After a fun-filled day, the final results for the day were:

In first place was Foxy and his team of Margie Thomas, and

Anthony Bowdler.

Second was Annemarie Calitz, and her team of Avice Steenkamp and Kurt Botes.

In third place was Brian McLean’s team of, Andries Bezuidenhout, and Leon Evans.

At the end of the day, everyone who played in the competition went home with a prize, chosen by themselves, from a table full of complimentary prizes.

After the official prize-giving, club president Judy Alexander, thanked MJ Kirsten, who was representing GBS, for their ongoing support and sponsorship.

She also thanked the following club members for their tireless input during the day: Wendy Counihan and her team in the kitchen for the catering. Michael van de Sandt and his team for the greens.

Andrew Meyer and his team behind the bar and Jonty Alexander who toasted the yummy sandwiches served at the end of play.

Thanks also to Dave Thomas and Peter May for the organisation and scoring.

Congratulations to Judy and her entire team for organising a memorable day of bowling for all who participated.

Correction to last week’s report: Pieter Stegmann’s team of Denny Richardson, Mike Tomlinson and Lester Scriven won their section at the All Cape and went through to play in the Cup playoffs competition. They were unfortunately knocked out in the first round to the team that were the eventual winners. Congratulations, you chaps.
