DOWNER: NEW CHAMPIONS LOSE LAST HOME GAME

- Mzwakhe Ngwenya

Victory not enough to see Wits move into second place in the league.

Patrick Sekese’s powerful header was not only a winning goal for Bidvest Wits’ against Kaizer Chiefs but also a culmination of good counter attack from the Clever Boys.

Sekese profited from a Jabulani Shongwe cross after his side defended a Chiefs corner to start a counter attack which left Amakhosi bemused following the goal.

Sekese came to the Nasrec venue as the unlikely hero as he started on the bench.

His introduction came at the expense of the club’s talisman, Sibusiso Vilakazi, who was stretched off with an injury.

His impressive showing may have shown Gavin Hunt he has the man to replace Vilakazi.

While many thought Chiefs will end their last game at home with a win, Stuart Baxter’s side at FNB Stadium looked less dangerous on a chilly evening.

This then made Gavin Hunt’s men to go for the kill as they won 2-1 comfortably and denied Chiefs to increase their point tally despite having won the title.

They drew first blood via a Henrico Botes header from a freekick within the fi rst five minutes of the game.

Bote’s goal showed that the Clever Boys intended to win this game and they duly did.

Ahead of this game Baxter said his side, the PSL champions, were not going to take this game for granted but their display suggested that they were not desperate for a win.

This is contrary to their performance against Sundowns a week ago today where they won 1- 0.

A Siphiwe Tshabalala freekick failed to galvanise Amakhosi for the kill as they wasted a myriad of chances in this game.

Matthew Rusike, Mandla Masango, Bernard Parker and Tshabalala had their chances but could not finish.

Masango looked at his chip with agony as Buhle Mkhwanazi cleared it off the line.

At this juncture, Chiefs were looking for an equaliser.

Wits’ win is not enough to see them finish second on the PSL standings as Sundowns won their game against SuperSport United.
