Heartbroken Johannes wants to stay

Robyn Johannes has described his heartbreak following AmaZulu’s relegation, but also affirmed his desire to continue at the club.

The former Orlando Pirates defender said he is now waiting for Usuthu management to hand him an extension to his deal.

“I had signed a one-year contract with an option to renew. I will wait on management, but I am still keen on playing for the club and adding more value,” he told the club’s official website.

AmaZulu dropped down to the National First Division following their 2-1 loss to neighbours Maritzburg United on Saturday afternoon at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Their relegation was confirmed when the team closest to them, Moroka Swallows, beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1- 0.

“I am heartbroken and speechless about what happened,” he said.

“I can’t blame the guys for trying, we fought hard but I guess it just wasn’t for us.

“We started badly with the soft goal, but Bongani Ndulula had a chance to see us through. Unfortunately, the ball went high.

“We tried our best and we just have to wait and see what happens now.”

Even though Johannes wants to stay at AmaZulu, his age could count against him. At 28, he and a number of other players could be shipped off to make way for a younger squad. The NFD has a rule that states sides must have at least five Under-23 players in their starting line-up.

Some club coaches have complained, saying this rule, which was implemented as a way to promote football development, is actually detrimental to the progress of the game.
