Drag cars line up at Tarlton

Normally aspirated V8s and four cylinder turbos will duel in Street classes.

The Tarlton Raceway near Krugersdor­p will host the opening round of the 2016 South African Drag Racing championsh­ip this Sunday. Heading the ladder will be the Top Eliminator category, with defending national title holder Dalmain Hattingh (Top Alcohol Slingshot) and Nico van Rensburg (Top Alcohol Funny Car) fighting for supremacy.

Reaching speeds of 260kph and more will be cars in the Senior Eliminator category

Entrants will include current champion Gavin Wilkins (SKF Mustang), Nico van Rensburg (Ford Thunderbir­d) and Sybie Coetzee, (Nitro Datsun).

The Super Competitio­n Eliminator category will see drivers like Simon Slooten (Dodge Challenger), Louwtjie van den Berg (Corvette), Leon du Plooy (Datsun Champ), Mark Slooten (Chev Camaro), Fanus Pieters (Opel Manta) and Jeroen Slooten (Mustang) in action.

The Street Car classes will see a fight between normally aspirated V8-powered, and turbocharg­ed four-cylinder cars, with little to choose between them in terms of accelerati­on and top speed.

The two-wheeler classes will feature national champion Zafar Hoosen (Suzuki), along with BMW racer Peter de la Rey and other Suzuki riders Jerry Lombard, Jesaja Lombard and Yusuf Patel.

The venue gates will open at 7am, with practice sessions in the morning. Racing proper will start at 1pm. Admission will cost R100 per adult and R50 for kids between the ages of six and 12 years.

Food and drink will be on sale, or you may take your own. Parking is free, plentiful and patrolled.
