The Stormers’ Super Rugby experiment with new young flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis was an enormous success last night. Du Plessis was in sublime form in his starting debut at Newlands in the Stormers’ runaway bonuspoint win of 46-19 against the Sunwolves, scoring the final try and impressing with his distribution, decision-making and work at the breakdown.

In a game where defence took a back seat the Stormers turned on the gas from the word go, they decimated the visitors at scrumtime, while running in seven tries to the three of the Sunwolves.

The visitors also received a red card in the last 10 minutes when lock Timothy Bond was guilty of a shoulder charge on Stormers fullback Cheslin Kolbe.

The Sunwolves scored the first points of the second half when scrumhalf Yuki Yutomi caught Stormers prop Vincent Koch offguard close to a ruck to score their second try to trail the homeside 27-12 by the 45th minute.

The Stormers hit back with two tries in quick succession by flank Sikhumbuzo Notshe to complete his brace and by scrumhalf Louis Schreuder to stretch their lead to a commanding 41-12 just 16 minutes after the break.

Former Shark fullback Riaan Viljoen completed his brace of tries in the 65th minute and the Sunwolves third.

The Stormers lead was 27-5 at the break.
