- André de Kock

The Midvaal Raceway near Meyerton will host round three of the 2016 Inland Racing Championship this Saturday, with seven four-wheeler competition categories in action.

The day’s largest fields should be provided by the Bridgestone BMW Club Racing Series brigade, with some 30 cars taking to the tarmac in four separate classes. At the front end of the field podium chasers should include people like Julian Fameliaris (BMW E36 328i Turbo), Darren Winterboer (BMW F30 335i Turbo), Riaan Woest (BMW E46 M3 GTR), Rick Loureiro (BMW E30 3.2 CSL) and Stefano Martinelli ( BMW E36 328i Turbo). The midfield battle could feature Mish-al Sing (BMW E30 325is), Lorenzo Gaultieri (E36 328i) and Craig Ball (BMW E36 328i).

One of the event’s biggest crowd drawcards should be the Big Boss Auto Super Saloon category, headed up by seven V8-engined Class A entries. Top drivers will include veterans Ben Morgenrood (Ford Mustang), Franco Di Matteo (Jaguar), Mackie Adlem (Jaguar) and Terry Wilford (Ford Falcon) who are increasingly coming under pressure from various younger drivers. Taking the fight to the old-timers should be Seef Fourie Junior (Chev Lumina), Amos Cockerham Junior (Chev Corvette) and Devin Robertson (Chev Corvette). Able to give all of them a headache will be Willie Hepburn in his venerable Opel Rekord V8. Behind the big bangers, a multitude of fast saloons will include Jody Vianna’s Mazda RX8, Adrian Dalton (Xtra Clothing VW Golf Turbo) and Jimmy Tsimenglou (BMW M3).

The Inex Legends Championship contenders should again add much to the day’s spectacle, with the tiny 1400cc Yamaha engined cars blasting around Midvaal at amazing pace. Top contenders will include Divan Myburgh, Seef Fourie, Keagan Wessels, Justin Robertson, Anton Repsold, Steve Nel, lady racer Lonika Maartens, Dawid Fourie and Shjaell Nel.

Top drivers in the Yokohama Modified Production Car category will include Dirk Lawrence (Honda Ballade), Jeff Langeveldt (Honda CRX), Adrian Dalton (VW Golf Turbo), Kalyn Miller (Ford Icon), Fritz Kleynhans (Shelby) and Mario Nardini (Nardini SP308).

The Midvaal Historics and Trofeo Challenge events should provide competitive racing.

Shawn Smidt (Datsun 160Y) has taken an early lead in the championship, but will come under threat from Brendan Parker (Datsun GX Coupe) and Trofeo challenger Warren Ewart (Alfa GTV 6).

For single seater fans there will be Formula Monoposto races, with a wide variety of open wheel cars in the Formula Libre and Formula M classes. They will be joined by a contingent of Historic Single Seater cars, including a 1962 Lotus 23 Replica, a 1964 LDS MK4 and a 1968 Titan MK4 Formula Ford.

The Silver Cup events will boast a wide variety of vehicles from hatchbacks to sedans, panel vans and LDVs. The circuit gates should be open from 7am, with racing scheduled to start at 10am.
