City coach has lofty ambitions

New Polokwane City coach Luc Eymael is looking to finish in the top eight in his first season.

The Belgian was revealed as the new City boss in the first week of July and after a couple of training sessions with the team, he said he still needed to see where the side can improve.

“We are looking at getting the team into the top eight, but of course that won’t be easy. We need a lot of games to improve and we will implement a new method of training. But I hope we can achieve what we want because we are all on the same page,” said Eymael.

“I have already assessed some players in our training sessions, but I will have to talk to the chairman and see what we can do and we will make decisions soon.

“We have a couple of friendlies lined up and I have to see where we need to improve, where our weaknesses are. But we still have to sit down with the chairman and talk to the players who will be affected by the situation.”

Eymael revealed that he is no stranger to the Premier Soccer League (PSL), as he was on the verge of coaching one of the big teams in South Africa in 2013, but because of reasons he didn’t want to reveal, the move did not materialise.

“I know your football in South Africa, I was here in 2013 and I have continued following your football,” said the new City coach.

“I don’t want to go back to that. I signed a pre-contract with a big team in the PSL and stayed here for two months, that is all I will say. But unfortunately I didn’t get to coach that team. But now that I’m back in South Africa and I had the chance to be here again, I will try my best to satisfy the people of Polokwane.”

The Belgian took his team to their first pre-season training camp yesterday which he said would give him an idea what the team lacked with the new PSL season looming.

“I have to teach my players to be very competitive and be confident, because each game has its own story,” Eymael said.

City finished last season’s PSL campaign in 13th position after collecting only 31 points from their 30 league fixtures.
