Trump gets big Mexican wave

UNDER FIRE: PRESIDENT LASHED FOR HOSTING TYCOON

-

I did it for my country, Nieto tells young people in face of criticism.

he had only two choices, the Mexican president asserted: to return the insults or seek a dialogue. He said he had decided on the second option.

Pena Nieto drew fire at home for extending an invitation to talks with Trump in Mexico on Wednesday that was widely condemned by Mexicans angry at Trump’s history of anti-Mexican rhetoric.

Since starting his presidential campaign, Trump has repeatedly referred to Mexican immigrants to the United States as criminals and rapists.

Trump also reiterated his hardline policy proposals on illegal immigration and border security in a policy speech he gave in Phoenix, Arizona on Wednesday after returning to the United States.

Meanwhile, Trump’s Hispanic backers distanced themselves from the Republican nominee on Thursday for standing by a hardline approach to illegal immigration in a key speech after indicating for weeks that he may soften his approach.

Trump tried to clarify confusion about immigration, his signature policy issue, in a speech on Wednesday. He said the only way undocumented foreigners could live in the US legally if he is elected on November 8 would be to leave the country and apply for re-entry.

Polls still show a large majority of Hispanic voters oppose Trump. – DPA, Reuters
