Jhb Art Week in a nutshell
FESTIVITIES: UNENDING CREATIVITY THIS WEEK
Creative spaces are set to stun.
Johannesburg will pulse of arts until Wednesday. Joburg Art Week will showcase the city’s vibrant and eclectic contemporary art scene. More importantly, it provides a creative intersection between differing city spaces, such as Alexandra, Westdene, Soweto, Rosebank and Braamfontein.
Supported by the Visual Arts Network of South Africa (Vansa) and the Contemporary Art Development Trust (CADT), this festival will see the city’s art spaces – galleries, project spaces, arts organisations, museums and training institutions dust of the welcome mat.
Festivalgoers will have the opportunity to experience the city’s diverse artistic hubs, including some hidden artistic gems, thanks to shuttles that will whisk them between the participating venues.
Art Week Joburg 2016 (modelled on a similar initiative in Cape Town) seeks to showcase Joburg’s multifaceted and innovative art scene, while increasing its visibility and developing new audiences.
Among the highlights is Ghanaian hip-hop duo FOKN Bois, who will be presenting their celebrated film Coz ov Moni (dubbed “the world’s first pidgin musical”), directed by King Luu, at Afrikan Freedom Station in Westdene on Monday.
Regarded as being on the cutting edge of satirical African hip-hop in their commentary on the realities of modern Ghanaian life, FOKN Bois describe their politically-charged style of music as “gospel porn Christian rap”.
During the festival, the Market Photo Workshop will be showcasing the photographs of anti-apartheid photographers Benny Gool, Zubeida Vallie and Adil Bradlow in a group exhibition titled Martyrs, Saints and Sell-outs.
Focus areas of Art Week the next few days will include Soweto today, the inner city and surrounds tommorow, Westdene on Monday, Alexandra on Tuesday and New Doornfontein on Wednesday.
If you’re heading to Soweto today, visit the Soweto Art and Craft Fair from 12 noon to 7pm. The market takes place at the beautiful Soweto Theatre every first Saturday of every month. – Citizen reporter
