Foreign invasion tops bill at EFC
CARNIVAL CITY: KABESA PUTS HIS TITLE ON THE LINE
Despite facing many snags on the way to Carnival City for the first event of the year, the Extreme Fight Championship (EFC) has shown its depth of talent to bring an event that is sure to excite the many fans of mixed martial arts.
It will be a case of South Africa against the world as foreign competitors from far and wide will ply their trade against the best the local MMA scene has to offer.
EFC57 on Saturday evening will see undefeated featherweight champion and local favourite Igeu Kabesa put his title on the line against dangerous Scotsman Danny Henry.
Kabesa was due to face former team-mate Boyd Allen, but Allen injured his wrist during training and was forced to withdraw.
This opened the door for Henry, who suffered his only loss in the organisation in his first title defence against the South African at EFC47.
“It’s never good to hear about a fighter getting injured, but this is the fight I’ve worked hard for and deserve,” Henry said. “I’m going to make the most of this opportunity and snatch my belt back!”
Two of the best heavyweights will have fight fans licking their lips as they vie for the right to take on current champion Andrew van Zyl.
Elvis Moyo was so very close to becoming the EFC’s first Zimbabwean champion, until he made a vital error against the never-saydie Van Zyl that cost him the title.
Undeterred, Moyo wants another shot at gold, but he must first face Michael Vermeulen, a man with monumental momentum, who is riding a four-fight win streak and believes now is his time for gold.
South Africa’s most experienced MMA athlete, Martin van Staden, will have his work cut for him as he takes on unknown British fighter and EFC debutant Christian Holley in a lightweight bout.
The British invasion continues in the form of another clash of the heavyweights as Tony Mustard returns to South Africa for his second EFC bout to tackle the undefeated South African Wessel Mostert. Both men have won all their bouts with early finishes and will be aiming to keep their finish rates at 100% and climb up the heavyweight ladder.
Also completing the main card is a middleweight encounter between the hard-hitting Gordan Roodman and young Bulgarian Georgie Georgiev.
