Portugal-based Amajita striker Luther Singh (right) believes the team has what it takes to do well at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations and qualify for the Fifa Under-20 World Cup later this year.

“We have gelled well together as a team thanks to our technical team. They have prepared us well for the competition and we have to ensure we make the country proud. It is up to us as players to perform,” said Singh.

“We want to qualify for the World Cup, that is our main goal, but it will take a lot of hard work and self-belief that we can do it. Our team is filled with a lot of quality players and we all understand each other.

“No team wants to be the first to go back home, we obviously want to win the tournament. We just have to put our minds together and make it a point that we win our games and qualify for the World Cup,” Singh added.

Having done well for the team during last year’s Under-20 Cosafa Cup, where he scored six goals, Singh is certainly one of the players trusted for the success of the national team.

“I won’t put myself under any pressure and I will just take it one game at a time. I won’t think about the final before we even get there, we all just have to take it easy.”

The 19-year-old forward has been doing well for himself in Europe in the last year, where he attracted the attention of the likes of Real Madrid’s B side and Vitoria SC – who have former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu – before signing with Braga.

Amajita played Cameroon in their opening match at the competition yesterday and next in line for Singh and his teammates is a clash against Senegal on Thursday, before a meeting with Sudan in their last group match three days later.
