Steve’s stuttering Chiefs have it all to do

Kaizer Chiefs’ Absa Premiership campaign has been erratic, even with some good results of late, and the 1-1 Absa Premiership draw against Ajax Cape Town last weekend put a further spanner in the works.

Although Amakhosi were top of the Premiership for a few days this month, there was always a lingering cloud of doubt over Steve Komphela’s team.

The draw against Ajax not only denied the Glamour Boys three points, but it also meant they dropped to fourth after the weekend’s results. Mamelodi Sundowns are already just two points behind Chiefs, with five games in hand. Komphela, however, remains hopeful they can challenge for the title.

“We have to win our remaining matches. Anything is possible at this stage,” said Komphela.

“We must keep applying pressure on the leaders as they will face challenges too. Suspension, injuries and loss of form are football aspects that can happen to any team. Elements of luck will also play a role,” said Komphela.

Chiefs’ pedigree has always been questioned, as they sometimes failed to play constructively and just scraped through. The fans – who have been pensive even when the team were top of the league – will worry that this may be the beginning of a decline.

Komphela was not concerned as he felt his team ticked all the boxes against Ajax.

“The only regret we have is not picking up the three points. There were more positives than negatives. Attacking play, set-pieces and playing with a will-to-win were the positives,” he said.

Komphela would have preferred to go into the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates on Saturday on the back of a win.
