Kaizer Chiefs’s sensational midfielder, Joseph Molangoane is itching for some Soweto derby action and is having sleepless nights thinking about Saturday’s Absa Premiership showdown against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium.

Molangoane (right) was an unused substitution for the Buccaneers three seasons ago and the atmosphere on the day made him wish to play a more active role in the country’s most anticipated football fixture.

“Sitting on the bench, I realised how big the derby is. I am really looking forward to Saturday’s match and I hope to get an opportunity to play,” said the player nicknamed “Tight” because of his small frame.

Molangoane said he can’t wait for Saturday and had already consulted the experienced Amakhosi left back Tsepo Masilela on how to approach the derby as part of the preparations for the match.

Pride and bragging rights for the supporters are what makes the Soweto derby such a big occasion, but Molangoane knows that at the end of the day it is the three points that will matter.

Chiefs have dropped valuable points in their last match when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ajax Cape Town last weekend, and “Tight” says they need to make amends if they are to stay in the title chase.

“We just want maximum points,” he said. The 28-yearold nimble footed winger will be among the players expected to bring the derby to life with their skill and pace. He will be expected to give the Buccaneers’ defenders a hard time.

But Molangoane knows that it will take team effort to overcome Bucs who are looking for a turn around after a 10-match winless streak.

“Soccer is a team sport and of course I want to contribute by scoring a goal or give an assist for a teammate to finish. However, at the end of the day it is not about me. I am just part of the collective. We win and lose as a team,” he said.

Molangoane said the fans invoke his performances, and should be at his best on Saturday with close to 90 000 expected.
