Baxter not fazed about top spot

SuperSport United fluffed an opportunity to return to the top of the Absa Premiership at the weekend when they were held 0-0 at home by Ajax Cape Town. Stuart Baxter (below), however, is not particularly concerned about top spot at this stage.

“That in itself is not going to break my heart, I know there are going to be a lot of ups and downs before the season finishes, and it is important where you are in the last kick. I just wanted three points to keep the momentum going and to make sure that we keep ourselves well and truly in the mix. It is disappointing that we did not get the points,” said the SuperSport coach.

“I was more disappointed with the performance, it wasn’t a poor perfomance, but it wasn’t a performance of our quality. I am disappointed that we dropped points in a game where I feel we dominated,” he added.

His counterpart Stanley Menzo is confronted with a different challenge altogether as he is expected to steer his side out of the relegation zone. Ajax have yielded some positive results since the Dutchman took over. He said they would only contemplate a top eight finish after moving out of relegation danger.

“We look where we are standing now and we can’t think about top four, we can’t talk about top eight. Firstly, we have to get out of the relegation zone. As long as we can get points and get out of the relegation zone, then I’m fine.

“Taking over in mid-season is not easy, but we are making steps. It was a long 90 minutes and we must be glad with the point because we didn’t play the way we can,” said Menzo.
