Marco is Rogers’ latest artwork
LEGEND: SIMONCELLI WAS ON ARTIST’S BUCKET LIST
Michael is passionate about motorsport and is an archive of knowledge.
Good news – well-known South African motorsport artist Michael Rogers has not hung up his brushes. In fact, Rogers has just added to his list of unique on-canvas tributes, this time to the late MotoGP racer Marco Simoncelli.
“Painting Marco, in my eyes a very real MotoGP legend, has been on my bucket list for a long time now, and I felt the time was right.
“This latest piece occupied most of my time over the past two months and depicts Marco on his works Gresini Honda, the rider and the Italian flag flying behind him,”Rogers said.
Simoncelli died at the age of 24 after crashing his Honda at the Malaysia circuit on October 23, 2011, involving an incident between the motorcycles of Colin Edwards and Simoncelli’s best friend Valentino Rossi.
With his Afro-styled curly hair, larger than life personality and aggressive, utterly fearless riding technique, Simoncelli was hugely popular with fans, and slated to become a MotoGP world champion.
In 2008 he won the 250cc World Championship with Gilera before finishing eighth in his debut Moto GP season with Gresini Honda.
Titled “Un Minuto Di Casino”, prints of the Simoncelli painting will be 63.5cm x 86.5cm in size, on 100 percent Innova cotton paper, and sprayed with varnish to protect them from UV damage in years to come.
Only 58 framed prints will be produced, each accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
