Has a nine-to-five job and indulges in her passion, music, at weekends.

Love her or hate her, Nomasonto Maswanganyi, also known as the controversial Mshoza, remains a relevant kwaito singer, despite most declaring the death of kwaito ages ago.

The star who made skin bleaching something of a standard for Mzansi celebrities, let us in on how she found love and would do anything for stability and remaining true to herself.

“A lot of big artists die lonely because they were busy chasing money and fame, forgetting to strike a balance,” she said, adding that she would give up the fame and money any day for her kids and fiancé.

“I’m actually worried because at the moment my kids are staying with their dad, but I’m working very hard to get them to stay with mommy,” she explained, adding that this is one of the reasons why she has a nine-to-five job on weekdays and only does music during the weekend.

“A lot of people look at me and think that I have blessers. I work hard and there is nobody footing the bill for me. Kids look at me and then do it wrong, by going after blessers.”

The hit-maker says although it took a while, she believes she has found herself true love and couldn’t be more content.

“Thuthukani Mcrain is a very good man with a good heart. A man who is rooted and a true Zulu guy; very caring and supportive.”

She says although it was not very clear in the beginning if Mcrain was interested in her or her friend, being with him feels right and genuine.

Now engaged, Mshoza says there are two things she feels are fundamental in a marriage.

“It is important for a woman to settle down. Women need stability and family. I would stop everything for my children and husband.

“Women should also not rush to the altar. Get married because you can’t imagine living without that person; you can be poor with him and live in a shack and still love him. Don’t get married because he supports you financially.”

The artist says for her, it’s not about the money, and she has even moved from the suburbs in Johannesburg to a rural area in KwaZulu-Natal.

“I feel that as long as we are together, I am okay. I have been in this rural area for about sixmonths now, and being with him makes me happy.” Ridiculed by many once upon a time for bleaching her skin, and having a lot of celebrities allegedly doing the same, Mshoza says with her it was not a matter of choice. “Most celebrities are doing it now. With me it’s different. I didn’t want to change my skin colour. It was because of a condition I had. I was okay dark skinned,” she said. “I wouldn’t go out of my way to promote it or even allow my daughter to do it.” The kwaito star who recently released a hit single Abantu bam, and is part of the lineup for the Back 2 The Old Skool International Music Festival, set to be held at the Wanderers Rugby Club in Johannesburg on Saturday, says she can’t wait to take the stage and wow her fans with her old and new songs. “It’s a very big show; a brilliant initiative.

We truly needed this. I haven’t performed in Joburg for a while, so my fans can expect Mshoza the pantsula,” she said. “I can’t wait to see people singing along to the songs. I will sing all the songs they know.” The kwaito stage at the festival threatens to steal the day with icons including DJ Cleo, Pitch Black Afro, Mapaputsi, Mshoza, Spykos, Msawawa, Mzambiya, Zola, Brickz, Thebe, and Tokollo of TKZee fame all set to perform. The Afro soul stage will see crooners Vusi Nova, Nathi, Malik, Sliq Angel, Ntando, and Mxo charm the female audience with their warm vocals. This promises to be a once-off chance to witness over 60 real stars in action on four different stages, without the skips of an old CD.
