Wounded Chiefs ‘must beat Wits’

CARDOSO: THIS HAS BEEN A BITTER PILL TO SWALLOW

It will be like rubbing salt into a wound for Kaizer Chiefs when they watch their team play new Absa Premiership champions Bidvest Wits at FNB Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

Not only will the Amakhosi faithful have to watch their team give the Students a guard of honour before the match, but they will be left to ponder what might have been when the new champions are officially presented with their trophy and medals after the match.

The Glamour Boys have finished the season without a trophy yet again and defender, Daniel Cardoso (pictured) admitted yesterday it will hurt to watch Gavin Hunt’s side being crowned on their own home ground.

“It’s been tough training this week especially knowing that we have to watch Wits take the trophy on our own ground. It’s been a bitter pill to swallow,” said Cardoso.

Midfielder George Lebese said the best they can do to cushion the blow for their fans would be to win.

“We have to play for our supporters … we have to win that game for them. That’s the motivation for us,” said Lebese.

The 28-year-old winger has been in and out of the team this season and at one point attracted criticism from former Amakhosi stars who urged him to take more responsibility as a senior member of the squad.

Lebese said the season has been a disappointment for the Naturena-based team and one they have to get over.

“It’s been a let-down and a learning curve. Disappointing for me just as it is for the team. It’s been a season to forget,” he said.

“We have to be more responsible and clever in our play next season. We as players have to make it right, especially for the supporters.”

The match kicks off at 3pm.
