Germans staying married longer

Berlin – Marriage is proving to be an enduring feature of modern German society as the divorce rate falls to a near 25-year low, according to data released yesterday.

The number of marriages dissolved last year fell by 0.6% – or about 1 000 – to 162 397, the lowest level since 1993, the Federal Statistics Office said.

German marriages on average last for 15 years, the data indicated, the longest since German reunificat­ion 27 years ago. – DPA
