Hats off to the amazing Mutambaras

What an amazing story of the Mutambara family (Arthur Mutambara, pictured). I am full of admiration for them and particularly for the parents. They must have been the driving force behind their children’s achievements: supporting, encouraging them to persevere, sacrificing themselves for a better life for their children.

There is no doubt that most of the colonialists thought that Africans were inferior and that most of them came to Africa to help themselves and not to help others.

Fortunately, some established the university at which Arthur got his degree and good schools which had prepared him for university.

I noticed he got a scholarship from a fund established by that arch-colonist Cecil John Rhodes to aid disadvantaged students.

But all the credit must go to the family themselves. Instead of complaining about injustice and destroying what had been built, they went forward with courage and self-discipline.

They worked hard and proved to the white people that they were as good as anyone else and better than most! Carol Botes, Pretoria
