DOING IT FOR STEVE

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Only a trophy will take the heat off Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela and defender Kgotso Moleko believes it is time for Amakhosi to deliver so everyone in the team can be happy. Komphela has been under pressure with howls for his dismissal now a familiar noise in the stands whenever the team struggles.

Now with the MTN8 already gone, Chiefs have the Absa Premiership, Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup to fight for.

“It will be good for us to win something so that the pressure can be off the coach,” said Moleko yesterday. “It would be nice if we could keep our winning run going as it keeps the fans at ease,” added the 28-yearold Bloemfontein-born player.

Moleko has been handed a chance to play following Ramahlwe Mphahlele’s injury and he has grabbed it with both hands. It is hardly noticeable that he had not previously played regular football.

“I have been here for a long time and I know what the club expects from each player. I know my job here and am always ready to do it. I am a professional and even when I am not playing I focus at training and take care of myself,” said the shy Moleko.

In his first start this season, Moleko impressed in a 2-0 win at Cape Town City.

“It was a good game and I am happy we scored two goals,” said Moleko. “There was pressure because it was a new defence with myself and Philani (Zulu) playing for the first time.”

Moleko then got his first assist of the season, setting up Siphiwe Tshabalala for a goal as Chiefs drew 1-1 at home to Bidvest Wits.

“We needed that goal and I am happy I contributed to it. It was simple and tough at the same time and I just had to be composed and play the right pass,” added Moleko, who also played in the 2-0 win at Maritzburg United on Wednesday.

He will be called again for duty against a hard running, table-topping Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium tomorrow night and he said he is always ready and expects a tough game.

The game starts at 8pm.
