Stonehenge returns to PE

REPEAT PERFORMANCE: 2015 WINNER GOING FOR A SECOND CRACK AT WINNING ALGOA CUP

- Jack Milner

Visiting trainers have dominated PE feature recently.

One has to go back quite a number of years to find the last time a local trainer managed to win the R350,000 Sunshine Sweepstake Algoa Cup (Listed) over 2000m at Fairview.

In 2013 and 2014 the race was won by Joey Ramsden-trained Disco Al, in 2015 Sean Tarry scored a one-two with Stonehenge and Orchestrated and last year it went to Brett Crawford’s charge, Nebula.

Tarry did not take runners to Port Elizabeth to contest last year’s race but Stonehenge will be back this year as will Nebula in Sunday’s race on the turf.

Stonehenge has won twice since his last visit to the Eastern Cape and his rating went up as high as 110. But he is now back to a more sensible 92 and Tarry, no doubt, thought it was worth the effort to take him back again. Tarry’s charge comes in with just 54.5kg to carry and will have S’manga Khumalo on his back.

Nebula has only raced five times since last year’s win and his only other victory came on the Polytrack at Greyville. He will carry 59kg but will have the services of Bernard Fayd’Herbe in the irons.

Richard Fourie rode Nebula to victory last year but this time he will ride Platinum Prince for the Justin Snaith yard this time. Platinum Prince is in excellent form and has reeled off four wins in a row. The four-year-old son of Silvano has won his only start over 2000m and runs off a merit rating of 94.

True Master (Craig Zackey) and Maser’s Eye (Grant van Niekerk) are Snaith’s two other runners.

Candice Bass-Robinson has accepted with Ollivander who carries just 52kg and will be ridden by MJ Byleveld while Andre Nel has Loadshedder, the mount of Keagan de Melo.

Last year’s runner up was Grant Paddock-trained Alghadeer who looks likely to carry the flag for the locals oce again. He has top weight of 60kg
