- Citizen reporter

Sixteen charities will share R1 million in prize money in next month’s Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile at Turffontein.

At yesterday’s draw at the casino, The Citizen drew Sean Tarry’s Tahini and are coupled with charity Nageng Primary and sports anchor Carol Tshabalala. Despite coming close on a few occasions, Tshabalala is looking to win for the first time in her 10th appearance at the event.

The Citizen’s soccer supplement, Phakaaathi, drew Hermoso Mundo, who is partnered with Thembimfundo Primary and actress Thuso Mbedu.

Hermoso Mundo has won the “Golden Triple” this year – the Gold Bowl at Turffontein in May, the Gold Vase at Greyville on Durban July day, and the Gold Cup at the same racecourse a few weeks later. The horse is unbeaten since joining trainer Weiho Marwing’s stable. Hermoso Mundo’s jockey is Weiho Marwing’s brother, Weichong.

Last year’s winner of the Charity Mile, New Predator, has been included in the field as has 2014 winner Bezanova. Durban July runners French Navy and Tilbury Fort and the Grand Heritage’s last two winners Irish Pride and Forest Fox are also in the field.

The 16 chosen charities will share the R1 million in prize money, with the charity that draws the winning horse receiving R150 000, the runner-up R100 000 and the other 14 charities getting proportionate amounts of the total donations.
