Arrows fail to shoot straight and are humbled by Stars

KwaZulu-Natal team Golden Arrows reserves missed out on an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Multi-Choice Diski Challenge after losing 1-0 to bottom side Platinum Stars at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday.

Arrows, who are looking to win their second MDC title, are on top of the standings with 25 points, just three points ahead of chasers Bloemfontein Celtic who are on 22 points after 11 games played so far.

The win for Stars was their first of the season, having recorded five draws and five losses in 11 games so far this season.

Arrows coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi (right) rued his team’s missed chances but hopes they will bounce back from the loss when they travel to Pretoria for a meeting with SuperSport United next Saturday.

“It was not our day, the boys played quite well and managed to create a lot of opportunities to score, unfortunately, the ball just would not go into the net. It is important that we manage to keep the lead at the top if we want to win this league.

“We have a very important game against SuperSport next, which we have to win,” said Vilakazi.

Meanwhile, Celtic, who lost out on the MDC title to Mamelodi Sundowns last season, are aiming high this season after an impressive start which sees them as one of the title hopefuls.

Having lost to Arrows a week before, the young Phunya Sele Sele outfit got back to winning ways when they defeated SuperSport United 2-0 at the Dr Molemela Stadium.

With four more games remaining to the end of the season, the battle for the championship will be highly interesting with Mar- itzburg United reserves also in the chase along with the Team of Choice, sitting in third place with 21 points, just four behind Arrows.
