Surcharge will line up for SA Classic at Turffontein

Surcharge will be taking his place in the R2-million SA Classic over 1800m at Turffontein on Saturday 7 April.

For the second successive race Stuart Pettigrew’s charge has landed a wide draw and this time, with 14 runners standing their ground, jockey Piere Strydom will have to jump from the widest draw of all.

Mike de Kock will saddle five runners and with the exception of Alshibaa, who will jump from barrier No 12, the other four have all drawn well. Like A Panther, who is highly regarded by the stable, will jump from pole position and will have Callan Murray on his back. The others are the third and fourth-placed finishers in the Gauteng Guineas – Royal Crusade (drawn No 7) and Noble Secret (drawn No 4) respectively – and Pietro Mascagni (drawn No 3).

Majestic Mambo, who started favourite for the Gauteng Guineas, will jump from barrier No 10 and has Anthony Delpech on his back.

The lone visitor in the race is Roy Had Enough, who along with Surcharge is highest rated runner, from the Frank Robinson yard.

While there will not be a winner of the Triple Crown this year the focus of attention in the R1million Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic will be on Takingthepeace, who is in the running for the R1-million Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara.

The Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner came from last to win that event so her No 14 draw should not be too much of a concern for jockey Murray and trainer De Kock. Her main danger could be stable companion Silver Thursday who was beaten just a neck in the Guineas.

The balance of the fields will be declared on Tuesday.
