Soccer ‘thugs’ hand themselves over

-

Two more people wanted in connection with the violence that erupted following a soccer match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last month handed themselves over to police yesterday.

In a statement, KwaZulu-Natal police said the two suspects would appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.

“The first arrest is that of a 21-year-old scholar from Newlands West. A headphone and a cordless microphone were recovered from him,” police spokesperson Briga- dier Jay Naicker said. “The second arrest is that of a 42-year-old gardener from Hillcrest.”

The suspects were allegedly part of a group of hundreds of irate fans who stormed the Moses Mabhida Stadium pitch on April 21 following the final whistle of the Nedbank Cup semi-final between Kaiser Chiefs and Free State Stars, which Chiefs lost 2-0.

Meanwhile, 13 more people are wanted by the South African Police Service in connection with the violence at the stadium.

Police yesterday released photographs of the wanted suspects.

“We are appealing to those captured on these images to please contact the investigating officers immediately. We are also appealing to members of the public who are in a position to identify these individuals to also contact Captain Reddy on 082-458-5630 or Detective Warrant Officer Mlungwana on 082-662-7764,” said Naicker.

Naicker said all information received would be treated in confidence. – ANA
