BASTILLE DAY: CELEBRATION WITH BUBBLY AND FINE FOOD
Unmissable events connected to the red white and blue.
Bonjour. Welcome to the weekend, and Bastille Day. Celebrated annually, France Day has tight connections in South Africa, thanks to the first French Huguenots who arrived in the country in the late 1600s.
Now, from Franschoek to Bryanston Country Club – Bastille Day is an unmissable event.
So grab your beret and celebrate the red, white and blue flag.

SUPPORT TOUR DE FRANCE
In celebration of the 2018 Tour de France, well-known wine-andfood-pairing expert Katinka van Niekerk has devised a series of French-inspired recipes to reflect cuisine and ingredients authentic to the regions through which the cyclists will ride.
This flight of fancy culinary journey following the route of the 2018 Tour de France showcases 11 recipes, each presented with a matching Nederburg wine.
The Tour de France is known as the world’s most iconic road cycling race. Now in its 105th year, the 2018 race is made up of 21 stages and will cover a gruelling distance of 3 351 kilometers. It kicked ends on July 29. Nederburg, established in 1791, is the wine partner of Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, Africa’s pro-cycling team who are again competing in this year’s Tour de France, for the fourth consecutive time.
They pedal to raise awareness and funds for Qhubeka, a non-profit organisation that uplifts communities through the distribution of custom-built bicycles through affiliate programmes. Qhubeka is an Nguni word that means “to progress”.
You can back Team Dimension Data and Qhubeka during this year’s Tour de France by picking up a bottle of Nederburg from your local liquor outlet, and enjoying it with Katinka’s flavour-packed Tour de France recipes.
You can also help raise support for Qhubeka by participating in the ForQhubeka fundraising drive. The five unique fundraising categories, each offering a range of tools to support the chosen fundraising activity, are: Party ForQhubeka, Climb ForQhubeka, Movie ForQhubeka, Play ForQhubeka and Sweat ForQhubeka.

FRANSCHHOEK EVERYWHERE
Following last year’s successful debut venture, Franschhoek’s Haute Cabrière wine estate, to-
gether with chefs Nic van Wyk and Westley Muller, set out on a second season of pop-up restaurants hosted in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and the Garden Route.
In addition to last year’s venues at Randpark in Johannesburg, Moonshot in Pretoria and Zimbali in KZN, Haute Cabrière will also be collaborating with The Peech Boutique Hotel in Melrose Johannesburg, The Bryanston Country Club in Sandton and the Oubaai Hotel just outside George along the Garden Route.
“Last year’s overwhelming response and support was humbling. We sold out within weeks of announcing the tour, a sign that our loyal followers outside the Western Cape are very eager to experience Haute Cabrière in their own cities,” comments marketing manager Lientjie McLachlan.
“It was an absolute pleasure sharing our passion for both food and wine with those who know and love the brand, while also introducing new food and wine enthusiasts to our wines and chefs Nic and Westley’s cuisine.”
Haute Cabrière’s food and wine philosophy centres around the concept of harmony and balance. Second generation cellar master Takuan von Arnim aspires to produce well-balanced wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while still honouring the unique characteristics of these noble grape varietals. A perfect example of this is the winery’s iconic Chardonnay Pinot Noir.
In the Cellar restaurant, chefs Nic and Westley rely on classic French techniques to deliver bold South African cuisine that has stood the test of time. All dishes are expertly paired with wines from both the Haute Cabrière and Pierre Jourdan portfolios.
