Clinical Wits thrash Chiefs

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Kaizer Chiefs became the second victims of an unforgiving Bidvest Wits, suffering a 3-1 defeat at FNB Stadium last night.

Amakhosi were hoping to build on last Saturday’s display where they held reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns to a draw. But they found the Students as clinical as they were when they beat Free State Stars 3-0 in their first game last weekend, and are top of the Absa Premiership standings.

It has to be said, however, that Giovanni Solinas’ men were no pushovers and gave a good fight. But it is clear that they have some way to go before they find the right combinations and rhythm to start winning matches.

The Glamour Boys started well with Siphelele Ntshangase finding Khama Billiat with some good passes but they could not unlock the Students’ backline. A cross from Ramahlwe Mphahlele, however, managed to get over the Wits defence and fell nicely for Leonardo Castro but he sent header over.

It was to be Wits who made it count. They took the lead when Deon Hotto caught Itumeleng Khune with a shot from outside the box, to score his second in as many games.

The lead lasted just over 10 minutes as Castro redeemed himself and sent his header past Darren Keet from a Billiat free kick in the 33rd minute.

But the Students were back in the lead again two minutes to half time when Terrence Dzvukamanja headed it in from a Sifiso Hlanti cross.

Gift Mothupa made it 3-1 just two minutes into the second half – making it quite a mountain for Amakhosi to climb.

Chiefs could have cut the deficit but Erick Mathoho failed to connect properly with the ball when he found some space from a corner in the 56th minute.

Billiat also had a chance to open his Glamour Boys account but his well taken free kick went inches wide, with Keet beaten.
