Hunt slams shot-shy Wits

- Jonty Mark

Gavin Hunt admitted that his Bidvest Wits team had under-performed after they suffered a first league defeat of the season on Saturday evening, going down 1-0 at home to SuperSport United.

“You don’t want to lose games like that, we were poor, but there was nothing in the game beside the goal they scored. We didn’t test their goalkeeper enough, it was not good from our perspective,” said Hunt.

The Clever Boys had gone into the game looking to make it four victories out of four to start the campaign, but besides having an early effort disallowed, they barely threatened the Matsatsantsa defence.

Kaitano Tembo’s SuperSport improved in the second half, and were rewarded as Evans Rusike volleyed in a fine effort, his third goal in all competitions for the Tshwane side this season.

It was SuperSport’s second league win in a row, and they have made a fine recovery from losing their opener at Cape Town City.

“We made a poor start against City, but since that game we have been improving as a team and we are very happy about that,” said Tembo.

Hunt, meanwhile, also bemoaned injuries to his midfielders, with Edwin Gyimah still not back, Daylon Claasen out for “three or four months” and Granwald Scott also injured.

Gift Motupa, meanwhile, was forced to pull out with a bad back.
