Beware rogue tow truckers

-

Des du Triou has some tips for unlucky motorists whose vehicles break down.

My neighbour’s car coughed to an untimely halt in heavy traffic. A persuasive tow truck guy then towed him to a “friend’s” backyard workshop where he agreed to have the vehicle repaired.

Needless to say, the entire deal backfired and he was left holding the oil can, so to speak. There’s nothing wrong in using an auto shop outside a registered MVA or AA recommended one, some of them are damned good, provided you stick to a few basics.

If possible, inspect the workshop. Dirty floors, grimy tools laying around, cluttered disorganised work benches, car parts strewn about, not good signs.

Ask in the neighbourhood how long the shop has been operating. Under a couple of years, big risk. Ask for trade references, if not forthcoming head for the exit.

And, most important, always use a registered reputable towing service.
