Boks must ‘prepare for onslaught’

- Rudolph Jacobs

No 8 Warren Whiteley issued a timely warning to the Springboks yesterday that they will have to prepare themselves for an even bigger physical onslaught from Argentina in Mendoza on Saturday night.

The Bok squad arrived in Buenos Aires on Monday evening and started their match preparations yesterday in the build up to Saturday’s return Rugby Championship match with the Pumas.

“They have a very physical back and explosive backs and I would describe them as a very balanced side,” warned Whiteley.

The Boks might have won the first contest 34-21 in Durban last weekend, but have drawn one, lost one and scraped through for three wins on Argentinian soil in the four-nation tournament.

“Although we won the contest in Durban, we all know we have to improve and play much better against a quality side on Saturday,” said Whiteley.

Backline coach Mzwandile Stick cautioned about the Pumas threat at especially the breakdown points.

“We know the Pumas are a passionate side who love playing in front of their own supporters,” said Stick.

“So we can expect a huge battle from them here on their home turf.”

The Boks will continue with their training in the Argentinian capital until tomorrow, with the squad set to fly out to Mendoza on Friday where they will wrap up preparations for the big clash.

The team had another recovery session yesterday morning and that was followed by their first field session later in the afternoon.

Coach Rassie Erasmus will announce the Bok team tomorrow afternoon South African time.

Erasmus spoke about making between four to five changes to the team who started their Rugby Championship on a high last weekend, with lock Franco Mostert set to return after being rested last weekend.

Meanwhile, Aussie referee Angus Gardner has been appointed to officiate the Test match.

Kick-off on Saturday is 9.10pm SA time.
