More gold mines may shut down

South Africa’s gold sector would be forced to close more mine shafts if labour unions’ wage demands were implemente­d.

The National Union of Mineworker­s is deadlocked over pay with companies including Sibanye Gold and AngloGold Ashanti. Producers argued they could not afford the wages the union demands as they struggle to control operating costs, which have led to output and job cuts. – Bloomberg
