PRE-MATCH CARBS

-

I am on a continual research path to try and understand more about the right way to do things. The scientist in me, and my research, brought me to Liverpool’s former head of sports medicine and sports science, Dr Peter Brukner and Dr James Morton of Science in Sport. They believe that carbs play a massive role in the pre-match ideal meal. Unlike the 1970s when a coke and a packet of greasy chips was considered to be the energy requirement for a big game, today’s choices are somewhat healthier and more scientifically based. The focus of the pre-match meal (at least three hours before the game) is to consume a high-carbohydrate meal – two to three grams per kg of body mass – comprising carbs like pasta, rice, breads, fruit juices, energy bars and energy drinks, as well as protein foods which would include chicken, fish and Greek yoghurt.
