Wide draw for Zouaves

GAMEPLAN: SPRING SPREE KICKS OF NEW SEASON

- Jack Milner

Grand Heritage on the cards for many of these runners.

Spring is in the air and we will be celebrating the new season at Turffontein on Saturday with the running of the Grade 3 Spring Spree Stakes over 1200m on the Inside track.

This will be the first Graded race of the new season and many of these horses will be using this event as a warm-up for the World Sports Betting Grand Heritage over 1475m at the Vaal on Saturday 29 September.

One of the conditions of the NonBlack Type Grand Heritage, which carries a stake of R750,000, is that every horse nominated must have had at least a minimum of one run from time of first entry up to and including the time of final supplementary entry on Monday 17 September. Zouaves, who is trained by Geoff Woodruff, is one of the fancied runners in that field and he is among the entries for Saturday’s feature.

However, he will have to jump from the widest draw of all. He is a runner who likes to come from off them so it will be interesting to see whether Woodruff will run him in this event or look to another event. Two of the other horses looking to qualify for the Grand Heritage are Talktothestars and African Ruler.

Captain Aldo has been out of action since finishing fifth in the Grade 2 Drill Hall Stakes over 1400m at Greyville in May has been allotted top weight of 62kg for the Spring Spree Stakes and having landed draw No 24 it has to be questionable whether St John Gray will choose to run his charge in this event.

Barrier No 1 has gone to Talktothestars but he has yet to pro- ve that he will stay this distance. While he won the Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint over 1200m at Scottsville with ease, he has yet to place over 1400m and further.

Two runners have been scratched from this race, Pinnacle Peak from the Dorrie Sham yard and Divine Odyssey, trained by Johan Janse van Vuuren.
