In Missouri, meat is real meat

-

Chicago – What is in a name? A great deal, as far as the US state of Missouri is concerned.

A new state law went into effect on Tuesday banning manufacturers from marketing lab-grown and plantbased meat substitutes with terms that previously implied meat products.

In short, no burgers made of tofu or sausages made of vegetables. If it didn’t come from an animal, it isn’t meat in Missouri.

The law – the first of its kind in the country – was championed by the state’s beef industry. The legislature approved it in May.

“This is about protecting the integrity of the products that farm and ranch families throughout the country work hard to raise each and every day,” Mike Deering of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association said in a statement. –
