Brazilian coup for Micho’s Bucs

Orlando Pirates yesterday added some Brazilian flair to their defence as they confirmed the signing of Caio Marcelo.

Pirates actually completed the paperwork on Friday, as that was the Premier Soccer League’s transfer deadline day, but they only announced the player a few days later.

Marcelo, 20, plays as a centreback and was signed from Nova Iguaçu, who play in Brazil’s Serie D and are based in Rio de Janeiro, also the place of Caio Marcelo’s birth.

It remains to be seen if Marcelo will slot straight into Milutin Sredojevic’s first team squad – he impressed in a trial with Pirates during the pre-season and had already been training with the side.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Caio Marcelo from Nova Iguaçu Football Club,” said a statement from the Buccaneers.

“The signing of the Brazilian defender was concluded on the final day of the transfer window on Friday last week.”
