Fight crime without corrupt police officers

The high levels of crime will have negative consequences, writes Tom Mhlanga.

The recent SA crime statistics are shocking. It is a sign that the country has gone to the dogs. It is also an indication that our criminal justice system is very weak. Murder, contact crimes, cash- in-transit heists, rape and other sexual abuses are all on the rise but, unfortunately, not enough is done to deal with this matter.

There are places that are known to be notorious in this country, such as some parts of Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, but no serious intervention was taken to deal with any of the problems there.

If we continue like this, we are not going anywhere as a country. These levels of crime will have a lot of negative consequences, which may include, among others, scaring potential investors in this country.

The only way to deal with these problems is by making sure that corrupt officers are not allowed to work in the Saps. All those accused of murder must not be given an option for bail.
