Pupil stabs teacher to death

The basic education department revealed yesterday that a teacher working at a school in Zeerust, North West, was stabbed to death by a pupil.

The attack comes just a day after an Eldorado Park Secondary School pupil pulled a gun on a teacher at the school.

“A pupil has stabbed a teacher to death in Zeerust, North West,” basic education spokespers­on Elijah Mhlanga said on Twitter. “Our officials are there. “Police have confirmed the incident.

“We convey condolence­s to the family of the teacher.”

He did not reveal the name of the school.

Gauteng education department spokespers­on Steve Mabona said a pupil at Eldorado Park Secondary School allegedly drew a firearm and threatened to shoot a teacher.

“The Gauteng department of education wishes to confirm the arrest of a 15-year-old boy pupil in Grade 8 at Eldorado Park Secondary School for pointing a gun at a teacher in class,” said Mabona in a statement yesterday.

“It must be noted that the boy was arrested by South African Police Service Eldorado Park today and charged with pointing a gun [Black Powerline gas gun] and possession of a dangerous weapon.

The pupil will appear at the Kliptown Magistrate’s Court today.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the department would demonstrat­e no mercy towards lawlessnes­s in and around schools.

“We have adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards delinquent­s,” he said.

“We will demonstrat­e no mercy towards lawlessnes­s in and around our schools.

“Pupils are encouraged to refrain from acts of misconduct in our schools.” – Additional reporting by ANA
