Garth Puller’s stayer set to complete course double
TARGET: RIO DE LA PLATA LOOKS TO POST SIXTH VICTORY
Warren Kennedy and Great Rumpus form the biggest danger.
Course suited Rio De La Plata, out of Garth Puller’s stable, looks on target to post a sixth career win at Scottsville on Sunday when teamed up with promising 2.5kg claiming apprentice Luke Ferraris in Race 5, the Nashua Maritzburg Pinnacle Stakes over 2400m.
This seasoned campaigner has proved that he has no stamina doubts as he has previously won on yielding ground carrying 60kg over the course and distance. The six-year-old confirmed his current well being in his most recent outing when scoring gamely on yielding ground in a 1950m MR 88 Handicap at this course.
The gelding has a bright chance to complete the double as his carded top-weight of 60kg will be reduced to a more accommodating 57.5kg by Ferraris’ apprentice claim.
However, he will have most to fear in Frank Robinson-trained Great Rumpus with Warren Kennedy up. This evergreen nineyear-old has been threatening a sixth career win.
Also not out of contention is Alyson Wright-trained Cat’s Legacy (Anton Marcus) who comes off a much improved last run at Scottsville over 1600m. Having 2kg less to shoulder this time he must be respected over the extra distance.
But top-flight Marcus has a bright chance to score on Socrates in Race 4, a 1000m MR 80 Handicap.
The colt was unlucky in defeat last time when attempting a hattrick, and with a trouble-free run he should recoup the losses. Next best are Lets Play Ball, Ishnana and J J’s Captain.
