Coach slams sorry Proteas

- Own Correspondent

The Proteas netball team have slipped again after lifting their standard last season, head coach Norma Plummer admitted yesterday following their convincing 6137 defeat to New Zealand.

Having lost 61-44 to world champions Australia at the weekend, the Proteas were left flailing at the bottom of the Sanzea Quad Series standings after their second defeat in Tauranga.

“We’re back to square one,” Plummer said.

“It’s still a slight improvement – we used to lose by more than 30 goals – but this was 24 and that’s not good enough.”

Within the first 10 minutes, the Silver Ferns charged into a big lead, with the scoreline reading 11-1 before the Proteas began to fight back.

Though they displayed some resilience on defence, particularly in the second half, the South Africans were let down in centre court, with only 49 shots at goal, as well as up front, with their strike force netting just 76% of their attempts.

South Africa face England in their final match in Melbourne on Sunday.
