Imagine trucks without drivers

-

Trucks with no drivers and electric engines might seem like something out of a scifi movie, but they will make their real-life appearance in the not-too-distant future. Volvo Trucks presented a new vehicle in Berlin last week, consisting of autonomous electric commercial vehicles which, they claim, are efficient, safe and clean.

They are intended to be used for relatively short distances, large volumes of goods and high-delivery precision.

The operation will be handled by autonomous electric vehicles linked to a cloud service and a transport control centre. The vehicles are designed to locate their current position within centimetres, monitor in detail, analyse what is happening with other road users and respond with high accuracy.

The control centre will continuously monitor their progress and keep an accurate watch on each vehicle’s position, battery charge, load content, service requirements and other parameters.

“The transport system can help meet many of the challenges faced by society, transport companies and transport buyers,” says Claes Nilsson, President of Volvo Trucks. – Motoring Correspondent
