Tembo moves striker Lakay to the wing

When Fagrie Lakay (right) was on the books of Ajax Cape Town last season on loan from SuperSport United, he was playing in his preferred position as a striker.

Upon his return to Matsatsantsa A Pitori at the start of the new campaign after a six-month stay in the Mother City, Kaitano Tembo has redeployed Lakay as a winger on either flank, as the likes of James Keene, Bradley Grobler and Evans Rusike are Tembo’s trusted men up front.

“My preferred position is as striker because that’s the position I played at Ajax but if you look at our strikers they have been doing well and for me it is not about where I am playing, I am going to play and do my best for the team,” said Lakay this week.

“If I could score in every game I would be happy. I have not yet set any targets for myself, I want to take it game-by-game. if I don’t score, I should be assisting,” Lakay added.

United have been preparing for Joel Masutha’s Black Leopards who they take on at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afterBidvest noon. United and Lidoda Duvha are both licking their wounds following defeats at the hands of Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic respectively.

Lakay says Matsatsantsa cannot afford to lose another game ahead of their MTN8 final appointment with Cape Town City on September 29.

“Leopards want to prove something and we want to prove something, so it is not going to be an easy one – we have to be well prepared. All the players know the importance of the game and we don’t want to lose two games before the final. It will be a big game for us confidence wise,” Lakay said.

He added: “We have a good team, so to me it does not matter who is playing on the day, we try to help each other and we work as a unit. It doesn’t really matter who scores on the day, just as long as we get the points.”
