Chiefs face another tough test

- By Mark Gleeson

Kaizer Chiefs and their fans have a whole new outlook on life after two solid away wins but the Naturena team may find it tough going against AmaZulu at Soccer City tomorrow.

What a difference a week makes! Just seven days ago Kaizer Chiefs were looking down the barrel of further disappointment as they contemplated tough away trips to Cape Town and Bethlehem on the back of their worst-ever start to a new league season in the Premier Soccer League.

But four goals last Saturday in Cape Town followed by two more against Free State Stars on Tuesday has turned around the season for Chiefs and catapulted them from a side facing a crisis to a team now making an early season statement of intent.

Another stiff examination of their prospects - Chiefs are hoping to break a streak of three successive seasons without a trophy - will come at home at Soccer City tomorrow when AmaZulu come to visit.

The Durban club might not be regarded as one of the top teams, but they have always proven a thorn in the side of the top title contenders. Witness the three goals they scored last weekend against Mamelodi Sundowns, when they came close to beating the champions.

Chiefs will be fancied to continue their winning run, but many TAB Soccer 6 and 10 players will see the value of taking AmaZulu for an away draw or even a victory as they look to upset the odds and collect a big payout.

Early weeks of a new PSL season are always filled with inconsistent results and Chiefs’ first five games of this new campaign are testimony to that. AmaZulu have a canny coach in Cavin Johnson, who will not be afraid to take the fight to their Johannesburg hosts.

AmaZulu will also have the advantage of not having played in midweek and therefore be fresher than Chiefs, who had travelled to the eastern Free State soon after returning back from their weekend jaunt to the Mother City.

Three games in the space of seven days is a tough task for any team, never mind the size and depth of their squad, and that could turn out to be an important factor.
