LOCK, STOCK AND WINE BARREL

- Adriaan Roets adriaanr@citizen.co.za

Many winemakers are going wholly vegan or introducing vegan ranges to existing lines.

Isn’t all wine vegan, you may ask? Harvesting on big farms usually means some animals get caught up in the mechanical process, such as chameleons. Vegan brands use small-scale harvesting to ensure no little critters end up paws in the air.

The other major reason some wines are not vegan is the fining agents used. In South Africa, albumin in eggs and fish products are often used to get rid of cloudiness.

Other common fining agents are gelatin and casein. These agents can be used in organic wine, but not vegan wine.

Delheim has introduced two vegan wines this year. The Delheim Pinotage Rosé and the 2018 Delheim Sauvignon Blanc.

They are available at leading wine retailers, restaurants and from the farm.
