Hunt: We should have won buy a country mile

- Emme McConnell

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt (below) lamented his team’s lack of creativity on Friday night, after a 1-0 loss at home to 10-man Polokwane City FC.

Polokwane’s Salulani Phiri received a red card for a bad tackle on Thabang Monare in the 22nd minute, causing an already deep-lying Polokwane City to sit even deeper.

“It makes it harder (the red card) because they sat deeper and we had to shift the ball quicker,” Hunt said.

“We had opportunities and we didn’t take them.”

Facing a team that often had nine men behind the ball, the Students worked the ball wide several times in attempts to create different angles to break down the stalwart Polokwane defence.

City dealt with most of the Wits crosses comfortably, but Wits did have a few chances to get behind or cut the ball back from the byline.

“We got around the back how many times?” Hunt asked. “We go two against one in the box, we got to pass to someone, he taps it in, but we don’t do that.”

Hunt criticised his team’s inability to create chances in the final third against such a defensive side.

“The final ball was dreadful tonight,” Hunt said. “We should have won by a country mile.”

It’s two games in a row now that Wits failed to secure three points, after drawing 0-0 with Maritzburg United in the previous match.

“It’s a hell of a disappointment,” Hunt said. “It’s two games we should have won comfortably.”

After a 2-1 Orlando Pirates win, Wits dropped to second with a game in hand.

“We should have been six or seven points gone,” Hunt said. “We lost to SuperSport here – these are the games we have to turn into draws – it’s two onenil defeats.”

In their last four games, Wits have claimed just four points, including two 1-0 defeats at home.

“That’s football,” Hunt said. “It’ll drive you crazy.”

Wits can now enjoy an extended 10-day break before visiting Cape Town City on October 2.
