Kaizer Chiefs’ recent upturn in fortunes has much to do with the form of centre-back Siyabonga Ngezana at both ends of the pitch.

The giant defender has not only showed his quality in the backline, but also popped up with some goals at the other end of the pitch, proving his prowess as a threat from set pieces.

Chiefs have won three league matches in eight days to overturn an indifferen­t start to the new season, conceding just a single goal in seeing off Cape Town City (4-1), Free State Stars (2-0) and AmaZulu (2-0).

Ngezana provided goals against City and Usuthu, using his muscular presence in the opposition box to good effect.

With Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas making a number of changes game to game this season, Ngezana has been a near-constant,
