Strong first entry for R2-million Gauteng Summer Cup

G-Bets, the new sponsor of the Gauteng Summer Cup, will be delighted to see 56 horses have been nominated to run in this R2-million race over 2000m on the Turffontein Standside track on Saturday 1 December.

The race has been particularly supported by Mike de Kock and Sean Tarry who have each entered 10 horses while Geoff Woodruff, who has been the most successful trainer in this race over the last five years with four winners, has nominated five runners.

Tarry-trained Liege, who won this race last year, is among the entries but there is little doubt De Kock appears to have the strongest group of contenders. He has a potent group of four-year-olds who include Noble Secret and Like A Panther who showed up well in the last season’s Classic races while the filly, Takingthepeace, won the first two legs of the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara and just failed to see out the 2450m of the SA Oaks in the final leg but still finished fourth, beaten 2.75 lengths by Secret Potion, who is also among the entries, from the Woodruff yard.

The there is Buffalo Bill Cody, who has won three of his four starts and is getting better with age, as well as Puget Sound, Pietro Mascagni, Silver Thursday and Condor Gulch. Add to that Cascapedia and Kilrain among the older horses, and you have quite an imposing cast of runners from a trainer who is looking for his 10th winner in this race.

To add to that Brett Crawford has entered talented American Landing while Dean Kannemeyer has entered the horse most people consider unlucky not to have got a call-up in the Durban July – It’s My Turn.

Then there is Coral Fever who loves this course but Robbie Sage’s charge could end up with a mighty big weight in this handicap.

Second entries close at 11am on Monday 5 November after which the weights will be announced. Final Entries close at 11am on Monday 19 November with declarations by 11am on Tuesday 20 November 2018.

Phumelela Gaming and Leisure reserve the right to have an input into the compilation of the Logs and in determining the final field.

The first eight finishers will all share in the stake money on the following basis: 1st R1,200,000; 2nd R400,000; 3rd R200,000 ; 4th R100,000; 5th R50,000; 6th R25,000; 7th R15,000 ; 8th R10,000.
