General gets off genocide rap
– A Guatemala City court ruled this week that genocide had been perpetrated during the long civil war, but acquitted a former intelligence chief of the killings.
Retired general Jose Mauricio Rodriguez, 73, was on trial for his alleged role in a counterinsurgency that killed 1 771 Mayans during former dictator Efrain Rios Montt’s 19821983 rule. The court found he could not issue orders due to his rank. – Reuters
