Aggressive, impulsive, paranoid narcissist 24-year-old had a high risk of reoffending, says psychologist.

Something came over his head like a dark cloud and he became “sort of a monster” when he raped and executed a neighbour, a Soshanguve man has told a psychologist.

Judge Eben Jordaan of the High Court in Pretoria yesterday sentenced Darlington Shibambo, 24, to life imprisonment for kidnapping, raping, robbing, and murdering his neighbour and journalism student Nolwazi Lubisi, 30, and attempting to kill her friend Bongani Ndaba.

Ndaba and Lubisi had been sitting and talking in the car outside the latter’s family house when a gang of robbers, including Shibambo, pictured above, kidnapped them at gunpoint and drove with them to a deserted spot where both were forced to undress before Lubisi was raped and then shot in the head.

The robbers took off with Ndaba’s BMW after shooting him three times and leaving him for dead. He lost consciousness but managed to crawl to the nearby road the next morning.

Ndaba testified that he still suffered from the after-effects of his bullet wounds and was so traumatised he had to continually receive counselling.

Shibambo was linked to the rape through DNA evidence. He was arrested with the murder weapon – a police pistol – still in his possession.

The judge ordered that the 15-year sentence Shibambo was already serving for another kidnapping and robbery committed shortly before Lubisi’s murder, must run concurrently with his life sentence.

Psychologist Dr Lynette Roux testified that Shibambo was an aggressive, impulsive, paranoid narcissist who suffered from several psychological disorders and had a high risk of reoffending.

The 24-year-old’s father died when he was young and his mother died while giving birth when Shibambo was 16 years.

Shibambo told Dr Roux he was drinking heavily and not himself when he raped and murdered Lubisi and needed help. He also wanted to meet Lubisi’s family to apologise for what he did. –
