Willemse’s versatility a Province ace

- Rudolph Jacobs

Star Western Province utility back Damian Willemse (right) has been a refreshing addition to the Springbok setup this year, even though he is in two minds whether his promising future lies at fullback or flyhalf.

Set to be named at flyhalf today, Willemse was seen as one of Province’s main attacking weapons ahead of their Currie Cup semifinal against the Blue Bulls at Newlands last Saturday.

“Coach Dobbo [John Dobson] told me this week there’s obviously a plan, whether I’m at 10 or 15, and it’s vital to stick to that plan,” said Willemse, 20, who played two Tests coming off the bench for the Boks this year.

“Matches against the Bulls are always big for us. I still get the licence from the coaches to do my own thing but obviously in the right areas of the field.”

While decision-making at flyhalf was key, Willemse felt there was more freedom at fullback, with more time to scan the field.

“My time at the Boks is always a great experience, but for now I’m here at Province and ready to give my best to see if we can take the team forward,” he said.

“At the end of the day it is just important for me to play. It doesn’t matter where, whether it is at 15 or 10.”

With Province being the outright favourites to advance to the final, Willemse could be moved to fullback later in the game to allow Josh Stander to come off the bench.

“I think Josh is doing very well at the moment and a lot of credit must go to him, and while there is a plan going ahead I will play both [positions],” Willemse said.
